They attempted to force Akar to sign the coup d’état declaration at gunpoint. They attempted to throttle Akar, who refused to sign the declaration, with a belt this time. Meanwhile, Deputy Chief of General Staff Full General Yaşar Gülen was also taken hostage by an officer from his close team by force of arms. Upon these extraordinary developments, the Commander of the Land Forces Full General Salih Zeki Çolak called the Chief of General Staff Hulusi Akar. However, the person who replied the call was Akar’s assistant Lieutenant Colonel Levent Türkkan. Türkkan called Çolak to the Headquarters by saying; “Sir, our Chief of General Staff is expecting you and particularly our Chief of Staff İhsan Uyar at the Headquarters”. When Çolak and Chief of Staff General İhsan Uyar arrived at the Headquarters, they were seized by the coup plotters at the entrance of the General Staff Headquarters. Security officer Sergeant Major Bülent Aydın was martyred by the coup plotters. Security Manager Captain Burak Akın was injured.
